Causes of tooth decay

More than 90% of people suffer from tooth decay to varying degrees, which is triggered by several reasons:

  • genetic predisposition,
  • weakened immune system,
  • acute lack of certain minerals and vitamins (calcium, fluorine, vitamin B, phosphorus),
  • anatomical characteristics of the dentition (congestion, gaps),
  • malnutrition and metabolic disorders,
  • diseases of the gastrointestinal tract,
  • lack of proper oral hygiene.

Damage to tooth enamel and the soft tissues of the teeth is caused by the Streptococcus mutans bacterium, which is always found in the oral cavity. If tooth decay is detected and treated in time, the tooth can always be saved

Tooth decay develops rather slowly, so it is important to recognize the problem early. However, the patient can only see the pronounced symptoms of the disease independently. Therefore, the initial signs of carious processes remain unnoticed for a long time. These can be:

  • darkening of the enamel, dark spots,
  • roughness, appearance of bad breath,
  • tooth sensitivity,
  • the presence of a carious cavity,
  • sharp pains
  • swelling and inflammation of the gums.

In order to avoid the need for complex treatments, it is recommended to visit your dentist for a screening examination at least once a year.

Types of tooth decay

As a result of the bacteria, the enamel layer is gradually destroyed, followed by the dentin and the pulp. Tooth decay goes through several stages:

  • initial (light or dark spot on the enamel)
  • superficial (brown spots, reaction to cold, heat, sweet or sour tastes)
  • medium (expressed spots, severe pain)
  • deep tooth decay (formation of cavities, prolonged pain, gum disease)

Ideally, the treatment of dental caries should be started at the initial or superficial stage.

Complications of tooth decay

Lack of treatment leads to complete death and loss of the tooth. The infection spreads to the soft tissues, which leads to complications:

  • purulent inflammation,
  • periodontitis,
  • repeated tooth decay,
  • broken or split dental crown

Today, extremely high-quality aesthetic composite-based dental filling materials are used in all dental offices.

At our clinic, the treatment takes 30-60 minutes, depending on the size of the caries.
