Hyperpigmentation is the result of the skin's defense mechanisms and improper functioning.
Melanin cells, which produce the pigment, not only determine the color of the skin, but act as a defense mechanism created by the body to protect the DNA strands within the cell from ultraviolet radiation. However, when the skin and body's defense systems are not functioning properly, any form of trauma can stimulate melanin production.
There are two forms of pigmentation, 'passive' and 'inflammatory'.
The main causes of passive pigmentation are hormonal imbalances (for example during pregnancy) or imbalances caused by medications. Inflammation caused by stress and anxiety can also result in pigment spots on the skin.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin suffers physical trauma, such as a wound, acne, burn, or even constant friction. It may not be immediately visible in some cases. For example, years of sun exposure without visible signs of damage can suddenly appear as age spots, usually on the hands, arms, neck and face. This hidden pigmentation can develop from the age of fifteen.
Successful revision of pigmentation requires a targeted treatment program and consistent use of home skin care products. Treating pigmentation does not work like magic. However, prevention is always easier than treatment, as melanosomes can spread through all three layers of the skin, even as deep as the hypodermis. This can make pigmentation extremely difficult to treat, even with transdermal agents, products, and laser treatments that penetrate deep enough to treat effectively. A holistic approach is needed for skin rejuvenation treatments, during which the hormonal status and dysfunctions within the skin must be taken into account.
